Happy you found a solution :) Just a remark, I'm enabling the "Use system's fonts for user interface" in OO.o and it's running smoothly, but maybe it depends on the font used (I'm using redhat's Liberation font).

EDIT: I decided to see what was wrong with OO.o, and after disabling "Use system's fonts for user interface" everything seems to be going smoother.

@joeamined: thanks for the suggestion. I participate actively in my LoCo and in irc... I never thought of asking for help about OO.o mainly because I barely use it nowadays. For my daily use I'm happy with just a text editor (Kate, or Vim work just fine) or I can also use Abiword.

My computer is pretty new, so there's no reason why OO.o should go slow; I might investigate the issue further and report a bug if a report is due. I'm pretty sure my gtk settings might have something to do with the speed issue (I use KDE).

leorockway, I didn't face slowliness in Open Office. Maybe if you ask for help in ubuntu forums or irc chat channel, you'll get a solution to your specific problem. Open Office improved its font rendering in this last version in addition to new functionalities and a lot of bug fixes, so take advantage of it :)

@Techky: You can wait for the final version released in 24th of April or use the current release candidate as it is stable enough to be used (it was released just 6 days before final version). The programs are available in windows as you said, but with Linux, they run in a secure and non bloated environment.

Don't rush into it ! Wait until the distro comes out of Beta. The programs you presented are also available in windows so we should praise the OS for other features... just my 2 cents

Nice post. I am looking forward to upgrading my laptop to Ubuntu Hardy I have pre ordered it from ShipIt. Each time I install it since I converted I have been impressed with the quality of both the OS and the applications.
