Ubuntu Hardy: Totally impressive !

19 04 2008

I just upgraded to Ubuntu Hardy and I can tell it is a pure marvel. The upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy went extremely well and smoothly. I did a sudo do-dist-upgrade -s, so the system was upgraded package by package. When it finished, I didn’t lose any of my previous preferences and applications and had them upgraded and perfectly working.

With this new version, I’m completely impressed by the quality of Gnome 2.22 desktop, Firefox 3 beta 5, the new Openoffice 2.4 and so much more things like the clock applet displaying weather and wind in your precise location and Pulseaudio bringing you personalized volume control for each running application !

The system became so coherent in its appearance and functionalities; the applications quality is so high that it is hard to imagine we get it for free ! (I think I should contribute too).

The more Linux is evolving, the more I realize it is undeniably superior to windows and stands the comparison with osx in every aspect.

Thanks so much for the Linux and opensource communities for offering us really high quality software.

You can go and get your Ubuntu Hardy copy here. (for now it’s a release candidate, wait for 24th April if you want to get the final version)

Nice post. I am looking forward to upgrading my laptop to Ubuntu Hardy I have pre ordered it from ShipIt. Each time I install it since I converted I have been impressed with the quality of both the OS and the applications.

Don’t rush into it ! Wait until the distro comes out of Beta. The programs you presented are also available in windows so we should praise the OS for other features… just my 2 cents

@Techky: You can wait for the final version released in 24th of April or use the current release candidate as it is stable enough to be used (it was released just 6 days before final version). The programs are available in windows as you said, but with Linux, they run in a secure and non bloated environment.

For some reason OO.o was running very slow on my comp.
Oh, well… I think I’ll just use KOffice from now on.

leorockway, I didn’t face slowliness in Open Office. Maybe if you ask for help in ubuntu forums or irc chat channel, you’ll get a solution to your specific problem. Open Office improved its font rendering in this last version in addition to new functionalities and a lot of bug fixes, so take advantage of it :)

@joeamined: thanks for the suggestion. I participate actively in my LoCo and in irc… I never thought of asking for help about OO.o mainly because I barely use it nowadays. For my daily use I’m happy with just a text editor (Kate, or Vim work just fine) or I can also use Abiword.

My computer is pretty new, so there’s no reason why OO.o should go slow; I might investigate the issue further and report a bug if a report is due. I’m pretty sure my gtk settings might have something to do with the speed issue (I use KDE).

EDIT: I decided to see what was wrong with OO.o, and after disabling “Use system’s fonts for user interface” everything seems to be going smoother.

Happy you found a solution :) Just a remark, I’m enabling the “Use system’s fonts for user interface” in OO.o and it’s running smoothly, but maybe it depends on the font used (I’m using redhat’s Liberation font).
